Trichomonas infection

Trichomonas is a protozoan, which is a tiny germ, similar to bacteria. It can infect the genital area However, it is quite normal and healthy for women of childbearing age to have a vaginal discharge. It can be spread from one person to another during sex from contact with the secretions from the vagina or the urethra (the tube urine flows through). However, the symptoms can be unpleasant. A short course of antibiotics usually clears the infection. The quantity and colour of this can change during the menstrual cycle, sexual excitement and pregnancy. That is, the vagina and urethra in women, and the urethra and sometimes the prostate gland in men. It is very rare, but possible, for trich to be passed on without having sex. The parasite likes warm, moist places so it can survive on wet bathing suits or towels and in hot tubs. An abnormal discharge which is thick and white, green and foul-smelling, or blood stained suggests possible infection Trichomoniasis is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, mainly affecting sexually active women. The exact number of cases in the UK is not known, but it is uncommon.

Treatment of Trichomonas infection

  • Do not drink any alcohol while taking tinidazole or metronidazole, and for at least 48 hours after stopping treatment. The interaction with alcohol can cause you to vomit and may cause other problems.
  • Some people feel sick, and may vomit when taking tinidazole or metronidazole. This is less likely if you take the tablets straight after food.
  • A metallic taste is also a common side-effect.
  • If you do not take treatment, in some cases the infection may clear away by itself. However, this may take several weeks, and there is no way of predicting if it will clear or not. So, treatment is usually advised in all cases.
