Alopecia - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of Alopecia

Alopecia is t he loss of hair from the body. When hair loss occurs in patches it is called as alopecia areata, when all the hair on the head is lost the condition is called alopecia totalis and when the whole body is involved it is known as alopecia universalis.

The caracteristic male-pattern baldness in which hair receds from temples and thins at the crown is a natural consequence of age, the activity of male sex hormones and hereditary factors.Women's hair may also thin temporarily after pregnancy and permanently during middle to old age, but baldness is rare.

Causes of Alopecia

Unnatural causes of serious hair loss may include

  • severe illness
  • enodocrine disorders sush as crushing syndrome
  • intake of poisons such as arsenic
  • adverse reactions to a drug

Patchy hair loss may be due to fungal infection.

Alopecia Treatment

There is no specific treatment for patchy hair loss, though steriod creams are sometimes used on the scalp. Some doctors treat the condition by manipulating an allergic reaction.

Hair transplantation is practised at some private clinics, but the process is lengthy, painfull and costly.
