Alkalosis - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of AlkalosisAlkalosis is an imbalance in the relationship between acids and alkalis - called the acid-base balance in the body, in which the alkalinity of the tissues is increased. Alkalosis may be caused by an excessive intake of alkaline foods, such as milk and vegetables and is occasionally seen in vegetarians. It can follow a loss of acid from the body after after prolonged vomiting or be caused by a reduction of the level of potassium in the body as a resukt of action of diuretics. Alkalosis can lead to apathy, weakness, muscular cramps, delirium. Alkalosis is treated by correcting the biochemical imbalance through a controlled diet and by removing the primary cause. Respiratory Alkalosis is a variant of this conditon in which the body fluids are highly alkaline and there is an abnormally low level of carbon dioxide in the blood. |
