Alcoholism - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of Alcoholism

Alcoholism is an illness caused by dependence on excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks, including sprits, wine, beer or methylated sprits. Alcohol abuse may cause a number of physical problems including cirrhosis of the liver, cardiomyopathy, peripheral neuropathy and some diseases of the brain, as well as physical and psychological dependence.

There is also a high incidence of gastrointestinal disorders, ranging from alcoholic gastritis to ulceration. The withdrawal of alcohol from an alcoholic may cause severe anxiety, tremor, convulsions and type of hallucination known as delirium tremens.

Alcoholism is extremly difficult to define. Clearly, when the urge to drink is so strong that it adversly affects the life of the drinker.

Alcoholism Treatment

Alcoholism may be treated in special centres and private nursing homes. Withdrawal usually called drying out, takes a long time. During this, the alcoholic is usually given tranquillizers to relieve withdrawal symptoms. Drugs such as antabuse which react with alcohol to cause vomiting may be either taken daily or implanted under the skin to remind the alcoholic not to drink.
