Actinomycosis - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of Actinomycosis

Actinomycosis is an infection caused by microorganism, Actinomyces israelii, that was once throught to be a fungus but is now genrally considered to be a bacteria. This microbe can cause 3 different types of the Actinomycosis.

Actinomycosis is usually found in the gums and jaw. This is because the organism is always present in the mouth. It is usually harmless but occasionally penetrates the gums to cause a serious infection and sweeling of the jaw and the formation of a boil that discharges pus through the skin.

If the microbe is swallowed, it may cause an infection of the digestive tract with discharges of pus through the sinuses, which develop between the gut and the skin of the badominal wall. The Actinomycosis disease may later spread to involve the liver and spleen and if untreated may then prove fatal.

Actinomycosis of the lungs occurs when the microbe is inhaled. In this form of disease, the lungs become swamped with pus, which may drain through sinuses to the skin and pneumonia often develops.

Actinomycosis Treatment

Actinomycosis is treated with antibiotics, although surgery may be necessary to drain the large quantities of accumulated pus.
