Acromegaly - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of Acromegaly

Acromegaly is a condition in which the anterior pituitary gland overproduces growth hormone. Acromegaly is usually caused by a tumor which may be benign or malignant within the gland.

The excess growth hormone circulates growth in the bloodstream, causing the size of the hands, feet and face to increse. If Acromegaly develops during the growing period of adoloscence, the result may be gigantism - a grotesque increase in heoght.

The progress of Acromegaly can be halted if the tumor is treated, either by surgery or radiotherapy, but any increase in body size that has already taken place cannot be reversed.
