Acne - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of Acne

Acne Overview & Information

The alternative name used in regards with acne are Acne vulgaris; Cystic acne; Pimples. It is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous ( that is fat or grease) glands and hair follicles usually found on the face, the neck, chest and shoulders. The condition usually begins at puberty and may continue for many years. Acne is caused when sebaceous glands within the hair follicles (pores) of the skin become plugged, because secretion occurs faster than the oil and skin cells can exit the follicle. The plug causes the follicle to bulge (causing whiteheads), and the top of the plug may appear dark (causing blackheads). Acne is not contagious. A tendency to have acne may persist through ages 30's to early 40's.

Moderate and severe inflammatory types of acne result after the plugged follicle is invaded by Propionibacterium acnes , a bacteria that normally lives on the skin. Acne commonly appears on the face and shoulders, but may extend to the trunk, arms and legs.

Causes of Acne

Although acne isn't life-threatening it can be uncomfortable and hard on your ego. There has always been a debate about the actual cause of acne. The actual cause isn't as important as finding a cure. Factors that can cause an acne flare include:

  • Oil from skin products or grease encountered in the work environment
  • Pressure from sports helmets or equipment, backpacks, tight collars, or tight sports uniforms.
  • hormonal changes,
  • exposure to weather extremes,
  • stress, oily skin,
  • endocrine disorders,
  • certain tumors,
  • use of certain drugs
  • Environmental irritants, such as pollution and high humidity.
  • Squeezing or picking at blemishes.
  • Hard scrubbing of the skin.
  • Stress.

What treatment can be done for Acne?

So is there a cure for acne? Well yes and no. There are many products available and for some they are a cure, for others they do not help. A cure is only a cure when you find a product that works for you. The treatment of acne by the administration of salve or ointment does not serve any purpose. First, take the following self-care steps to lessen the effects of acne:

  • Clean your skin gently with a mild, non-drying soap (like Dove, Neutrogena, or Basics), removing all dirt or make-up. Wash once or twice a day, including after exercising. However, avoid excessively or repeatedly washing the skin.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide 3% applied directly to pimples seems to work for some people.
  • Try not to squeeze, scratch, pick, or rub the pimples. Although it might be tempting to do this, it can lead to scarring and skin infections.
  • Regular exercise helps keep your whole body in shape. It builds your immune system and helps eliminate toxins from the body. It's a great start to fighting acne.
  • Stress can be a contributing factor to acne so try to relax and unwind. Emotions trigger chemical reactions in the body which can cause an outbreak.
  • Identify and avoid anything that aggravates acne. Your triggers may include foods, lotions, or make-up.
  • Severe acne may require treatment from a doctor. Prescription medications and creams may include tetracycline and tretinoin.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide 3% applied directly to pimples seems to work for some people.

How to Get rid of acne

  • In a container, mix lemon juice, lime juice, apple sauce, and finally ranch dressing. Put in 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, 2 teaspoons of lime juice, 1/2 cup of apple sauce, and 1/4 cup of ranch dressing. You should have created a thick creamy substance.
  • Rub on your face, neck, and back in full motion circles that will allow the cream to get into your pores.
  • Let sit on face for about 12 minutes.
  • Wash off with a washcloth drenched in ice cold water.
  • Repeat 1-2 times a day, until your zits are gone!
