Acidosis - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of Acidosis

Acidosis is an imbalance in the body's acid base balance that is the relationship between body acids and alkalis. In Acidosis these is an increse in the acidity of the body's fuilds and tissues. Contrary to popular belief, Acidosis is not the same as dyspepsia.

Acidosis Causes

Acidosis is caused by a failure of the delicate mechanisms that regulate the acid-base balance, if they become over burdened with the chemical by-products of metabolism. The over-burdening may be caused by diseases of the lungs, kidneys and the blood whosw interaction maintains the acid-base balance or metabolic disorders such as disbetes mellitus.

Acidosis Symptoms

Depending on the severity of Acidosis, the condition may result in an increase in the rate of breathing, tiredness and nausea. Sometimes a distinctive aroma of acetone which smells a little like nail varnish remover, may be smelt on the breath.

Treatment and Cure

The treatment of Acidosis differs according to its cause. In the condition known as ketoacidosis, a complication of diabetes mellitus, the body becomes dehydrated and patient feels intensely thirsty and suffers from constipation, cramps and visual disturbances. This condition can lead to diabetic coma and is treated as an amergency. Patients of Acidosis are treated in hospital with insulin to regulate the blood sugar level and large quantitities of fuild are given intravenously to correct the dehydration.
