Achalasia - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of AchalasiaAchalasia is the failure of a muscle to relax after contraction. Achalasia of the muscles in the wall of the intestines is a symptom of Hirschsprung's disease but the term is normally used to denote a contration of mscles of the lower end or cardia of the oesophagus. This condition which results from damage to the nerves that supply the region causes difficulty in swallowing, chest pain and comiting. The ovefflow of food from teh gullet may pass into the lungs causing serious infection. Achalasia Treatment and CureAchalasia is treated with muscle-relaxing drugs. Achalasia of the cardia also called cardiospasm may be treated by cutting the affected muscles in a surgical operation. This relieves the spasm permanently, but does not interfere with normal swallowing.
