Abscess - Cause, Symptoms, Treatment of Abscess

Abscess Overview & Information

Abscess is a pocket of pus that may arise in any part of the body tissue that has been invaded by bacteria. Pus is a thick, greenish yellow fuild tissue composed of bacteria, dead tissue and dead white cells. The continued presence of bacteria in a suppurating infection attracts more and more white cells to the site and these unable to kill all the bacteria, die, so creating more pus and enlarging the Abscess. The swollen Abscess may impinge on other tissues and this together with the toxins or poisions produced by the bacteria causes swelling and pain in Abscess.

Abscess Causes

A pus is the result of a fight against the invading bacteria by the body's defence system. This sends large numbers of leucocytes or white blood cells to the site of the Abscess infection and these kill the bacteria by engulfing them.

What treatment can be done for Abscess?

If an Abscess does not burst spontaneously, it may be treated with antibiotics to kill the bacteria or lanced that is opened with a scapel and the pus drained out. A boil, an Abscess close to the surface of the skin may be lanced under local anaesthetic but Abscess deep in the body may need to be drained in an operation under general anaesthetic.

Painful tooth Abscess require special dental surgery.
